If you want to sell online, you'll soon face the question: should I use a ready-made platform like Shopify or have my own shop built? Both paths have their merits. What matters is where your business stands today – and where you want it to grow.
Shopify: quick to get going
- Fast start: With a good theme, your shop can be live in just a few weeks.
- Minimal technical hassle: The platform handles hosting, security and updates.
- Plenty of extensions: There's an app for almost every feature you need.
The flip side: monthly base fees, transaction costs and paid apps add up as your sales grow. And when you have very specific workflows, you'll hit the limits of the system.
Your own shop: complete freedom
- No ongoing platform fees and no dependence on a single provider.
- Custom processes: inventory, returns, shipping labels or your own apps can be built exactly the way your business operates.
- Everything in one place: shop, orders and customer communication in a single system.
In return, the initial investment is higher, and you'll need to budget for maintenance and ongoing development.
When does each make sense?
Shopify works if you want to get started quickly, have a manageable product range and standard workflows are enough for you.
Your own shop works if your processes are unique, platform fees start to matter, or you want to tightly integrate your shop, inventory management and shipping.
Here's an example from our work: for ankauf1.de we built a custom system – with instant pricing depending on device condition, automatically generated DHL shipping labels, and an admin area where the team manages prices and the catalogue themselves. These kinds of custom workflows often can only be handled with standard platforms by adding extra apps.
The bottom line
There's no "better" solution for everyone. In our initial meeting, we'll do the maths together on what makes sense for your business – and if it makes sense, we'll plan for a later switch from the start.
