Your customers are comparing – whether you like it or not. When someone searches for your service on Google, they usually open two or three results side by side and decide in seconds where to inquire. So the question isn't whether your website is good, but whether it's better than the others.
The good news: such a comparison is not rocket science. With the right criteria, you'll quickly see where you're ahead and where you're giving away inquiries.
Who should you compare?
Don't pick the biggest names in your industry, but the businesses that appear next to you on Google for your most important search terms – like "plumber Manchester" or "tax advisor London". Those are the websites you're really competing against in everyday life. Two or three competitors are perfectly sufficient.
The six criteria that matter
1. Load time
A slow page loses visitors before they even see anything – especially on mobile. Compare how quickly the home pages load on a phone. If competitors are noticeably faster, large images, too many scripts or slow hosting are usually to blame. Read more in our article on faster load times.
2. Mobile view
Open all websites on your phone. Can you find the phone number and contact options straight away? Are texts readable without zooming, are buttons large enough? This often decides who gets the call.
3. Visibility on Google
Whoever ranks higher for the important search terms gets more clicks. The basics – clear page titles, good descriptions, a clean structure – any website can meet these. Our SEO checklist shows what these are.
4. Security
A warning "Not secure" in the browser drives visitors away immediately. A valid SSL certificate is essential; additional security settings show how well-maintained a website is technically.
5. Legal compliance
Missing imprint or privacy policy looks unprofessional – and can be expensive. Check whether both are accessible on every page for you and your competitors.
6. Accessibility
Since June 2025, the Barrier-Free Strengthening Act (BFSG – Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz) applies to many online services. Regardless of legal requirements, all visitors benefit from good contrasts, clear labels and operation without a mouse. Read more in our article on the BFSG.
What numbers don't show – but customers see
Technology is measurable, trust is only partly so. Look at the websites with a customer's eye:
- First impression: Can I understand in five seconds what's offered and who it's for?
- Evidence: Are there real references, team photos, reviews?
- Next step: How easy is it for me to inquire, call or book an appointment?
- Currency: Do the contents look well-maintained – or is the latest news from three years ago?

A comparison is just the beginning. Focus on the areas with the biggest gap and the biggest impact on inquiries – usually that's mobile view, load time and a clear path to contact.
